Conditions for Women who are Sexually Active Can Get the HPV Vaccine

The HPV vaccine is given to women who have not been sexually active.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — There are two conditions for woman who are sexually active can be injected vaccine HPV in order to prevent infection with oncogenic human papilloma virus as the cause cancer cervix. The two conditions in question are that the woman who will be injected has not been infected with HPV and has not experienced any type of infection cervical cancer before being given the vaccine.

“The condition for the cervical cancer vaccine is that the woman has not been infected with HPV because the goal is not to get infected with HPV,” said the Obstetrics & Gynecologist, dr. Grace Valentine, Sp.OG. who practices at RSPI – Puri Indah in a webinar entitled “Women’s Talk: Stronger Together Against Cancer”, some time ago.

Grace, who is a member of the Indonesian Obstetrics and Gynecology Association, reminded that even though a woman will have received a complete vaccination, they are still advised to have regular Pap smears. This is because the vaccines currently available are only for the two most common types of viruses, namely types 16 and 18 (the main causes of cervical cancer cases) and low-risk HPV types, namely 6 and 11 as the cause of genital warts in women and men.

Meanwhile, there are still several other oncogenic HPV types for which a vaccine has not been found. Regular Pap smears are expected to be an early detection of precancerous cells if a woman is infected with another HPV.

The HPV vaccine includes primary prevention so that a woman is not infected with HPV. Recently, the Minister of Health, Budi Gunadi Sadikin, established the HPS vaccine as one of the mandatory vaccinations for adolescents.

The HPV vaccine will be useful so that the body forms antibodies to fight the virus so it doesn’t get infected. This vaccine can be given from girls to women aged 10-45 years who have not been sexually active.

The dose in those aged 10-13 years is twice, namely at month 0 and month 6. Meanwhile, for women aged 13 years and over, it is recommended to give three doses, namely the 0th month, 1st or 2nd month and 6th month.

“Vaccination for women who are not sexually active can be done immediately. Only one series of vaccines is needed, no further boosters are needed at this time,” said Grace.

Men can also get the HPV vaccine as a prevention of high-risk viral infections that cause penile cancer, although the number of cases is currently quite low. “If you want to prevent penile cancer in men, it’s fine for the same dose,” said Grace.
