India records first case of human death from bird flu virus

NEW DELHI – An 11 year old boy from the state of Haryana, India , died of the bird flu virus of the H5N1 type.

This is the first death from bird flu in the country, according to an official statement by the Indian government.

The boy died of multi-organ dysfunction on July 12, at All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, where he has been treated since July 2.

A statement issued by the Indian Ministry of Health said the case had been reported to the Livestock Service, and a team of experts was conducting an epidemiological study at AIIMS.

The team of doctors and nurses treating the patient have been monitored since July 16 for the development of an influenza-like illness. “Authorities have launched contact tracing,” the Indian government statement said.

“So far, no close contact has been reported to be symptomatic. There are no symptomatic individuals in the area at this time,” said the Ministry of Health.
