Index – Domestic – The country has a new voivodeship

Due to the coronavirus epidemic, it was only now that Gusztáv Lakatos, who became a gypsy voivode of Miskolc and Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county, was able to take an oath. He was not the first voivode in the county in 2008 they have already chosen one In the person of Attila Vajda.

However, the ceremony was now much more restrained than its inauguration 13 years ago. Instead of a horse-drawn carriage, a limousine, and a closed main street, the new voivode, Gusztáv Lakatos, told the text of the voivodeship of the voivodes in a narrow circle, with the blessing of the representatives of the Reformed and the Catholic Church.

Upon our request, the new owner of the address said

the request came from Csaba Kállai, the national voivode

even two years ago who to the Index he said: with his office and authority, he wants to work to improve the fate of disadvantaged people.

However, there seems to be a serious determination behind the loud words, because Gusztáv Lakatos explained that this year he wants to motivate young people who have almost dropped out of secondary education to study with the help of vocational schools, and even provides job opportunities for young people in construction.

Many young people do not have a profession and it is not possible to make a living and move forward with the amount of public benefit work.

The construction contractor also plans to set up a foundation to help educate and employ Roma, as well as help solve housing problems.

Butter chain from 1774

László Vajda, whose grandfather was the chosen voivode of the former Zala County, was very surprised to hear the news.

The county police captain appointed my grandfather as a voivode in 1947, and the seriousness of the title is also suggested by who asked for it.

A descendant of the former voivode commented on the situation. At that time, it was important for someone to represent the Roma before the official bodies, László Vajda briefly summarized the tasks associated with the position. Over the years, the issue of representation was resolved, and the obligation of the voivode to report to the law enforcement agencies slowly disappeared, so

the role of the voivodeships also became increasingly weightless before state bodies, but in Roma society they were still respected.

According to László Vajda, the role of the former voivode was similar to that of the current minority self-governments, but while the former was performed by a man for many years, from 1998 onwards the deputies will be elected. The latter representation does not even have sufficient authority to provide meaningful assistance to the Roma in solving a possible problem, said László Vajda, who was once the vice-president of the National Roma Self-Government.

Today, the Roma believe that the title of voivode has lobbying power, László Vajda shed light on why this title is so popular among wealthy Roma.

The current voivodeships are always trying to take action when the elections come, as they surround the current government.

However, in his opinion, the voivodship system no longer works in Hungary today, as the Roma themselves no longer accept the voivodships as the leader of the community, László Vajda concluded.

Perception and reality about the Roma

Copper artist Benjamin believes that today only a worn-out, vacant system of institutions is the voivodship, which cannot be used by the gypsy society in the present age, as many people hardly know it. According to the young Roma political scientist, today’s Roma community has different needs.

We need normal legal relations and legal certainty, which not only the Gypsy community thinks are valid for itself, but also the Hungarian state considers them valid.

Yet Benjamin Copper explains the mysterious atmosphere around the voivodeships by distorting the general image of the gypsies. In his view, in non-Gypsy society, a mystified Roma worldview has emerged about Gypsies, in which the general rules do not apply, they believe that the Roma live under different rules.

This is the kind of preconception that the majority society has about us, the projection of which is that they still consider the butter system to be valid for us.

Benjamin Copper closed his thoughts.

The future will show

The fact that behind the sound words of Gusztáv Lakatos, the new voivode of Miskolc, is not just an empty set of bubbles, it may also indicate that it offers an economic alternative to the livelihood problems of the Roma living in the county and aims to create decent housing conditions.
