Index – Abroad – Russia’s War in Ukraine – Index News Summary for Friday

Born in Transcarpathia, Tibor Tompa has been living in Makariv, a suburb of the Ukrainian capital, for forty years. THE Free for Europe he gave an interview in which he recounted how they had experienced the beginning of the war.

We were still celebrating a birthday on February 23rd, we had a great time. On the morning of the 24th, around half past five, we woke up to two big explosions not far from our apartment. At first we thought it could have been a natural disaster. After that, our acquaintances called that Russia had attacked Ukraine. The rockets exploded a few miles from our apartment

He said, then reported that he had finally fled to Transcarpathia on March 5, at the last minute.

There was only one direction left relatively free. It had to be re-recorded there as well, because partly the Russian zone had to be crossed (…) bombings and so-called diverse groups in the first seventy kilometers

He said. He added that they had gone with another family and it took two days to get to Transcarpathia safely.

Tibor Tompa said of how the Hungarians are now being judged by the Ukrainians: “The Hungarian government is unanimously wrong. In Kiev, everyone sees the Hungarian government as Russia’s attitude that today’s Hungarian government is under Russia’s hat. ”

As far as Hungarians are concerned, this is no longer the case. In Hungary, 25 percent of the population is Russophilic, ie Russian-minded. On the other hand, the others – especially as far as Budapest is concerned, and partly the people of Western Hungary – are considered to be loyal and European-minded. They remember 1956, that’s what they tell me. On the other hand, there is a 25 percent who unfortunately forgot 1956

– said Tibor Tompa, who does not feel that the Hungarians of Transcarpathia are threatened by any atrocities now.

In my opinion, it is not the best thing for the Hungarian government to be constantly hot. To constantly scold, to constantly get into a word battle with the Ukrainian leadership. Or what happened recently, for a while the Hungarian government and its leader questioned what happened in Bucsa, I have no say

Said Tibor Tompa, who said at the end of the interview that he was preparing to move back to his place of residence. He was asked to wait any longer for this, as there are now logistical difficulties in the vicinity of Kyiv, so it could be a problem for everyone to return at once.

We hope that now for that [az oroszoknak] broke their teeth into Kiev. From the beginning, we were not prepared to go abroad because our existence is there in Kiev. We plan to go back in the next few weeks

– said Tibor Tompa.
