Incarceration of Main Suspect in Feminicide Case Sparks Urgent Conversation on Domestic Violence in France

The main suspect of the feminicide has been incarcerated. The spouse of the woman killed on Tuesday in Chambray-lès-Tours (Indre-et-Loire) was indicted and imprisoned on Saturday, the Tours prosecutor’s office announced. “Following the discovery of the lifeless body of a woman on August 29 on the public highway in the town of Chambray-Les-Tours, her spouse was indicted this afternoon (Saturday) on the charge of murder by spouse, and remanded in custody,” prosecutor Catherine Sorita-Minard said in a statement.

The alleged perpetrator, born in 1965 in Baghdad, with no criminal record and arrested on Thursday, “recognizes an episode of violence, evoking reciprocal violence and denying any homicidal intention”, according to the magistrate, specifying that the investigations were continuing under the direction of an examining magistrate. The couple had four children, one of whom is still a minor.

118 feminicides in 2022

In 2022, 118 women were killed in France by their spouse or ex-spouse, four less compared to 2021, according to the report of “violent deaths within the couple” published on Saturday by the Ministry of the Interior.

According to this study, 145 violent deaths within the couple were recorded in 2022, 118 women and 27 men (+6 compared to 2021), almost the same total as the previous year (143). On average, a feminicide occurs every three days in France.
