Heavy snowfall again in April: accidents, power outages and traffic chaos

Snow chaos in the region: Due to the renewed severe onset of winter, there were traffic obstructions and traffic accidents on the streets throughout Lower Franconia on Saturday night. “Many motorists were surprised by the snowfall. Some had already put on summer tires and ended up in a ditch,” says Andy Laacke, spokesman for the police in Lower Franconia. Luckily no one was seriously injured. But fire brigades, police, technical assistance and the Bavarian Red Cross all had their hands full trying to get stranded vehicles free quickly.

The German Weather Service (DWD) again warns of slippery roads on Sunday night. According to the meteorologists, 10 to 15 centimeters of fresh snow could fall in southern Bavaria by Sunday morning, and even up to 20 centimeters in the north-western regions. It could even snow again in northern Franconia and in the eastern low mountain ranges. According to the DWD, there is a risk of ice on some of the roads in Bavaria.

The district of Miltenberg was particularly affected on Friday evening. More than ten centimeters of fresh snow fell there within a very short time. “The snow load on the trees was extremely heavy, causing dozens of trees to fall and block roads,” the police spokesman said. There were power outages in many towns along the Lower Main. On Saturday morning, 15 towns and around 7,500 people were still without electricity.

Accident: A3 was completely closed for over an hour

The A3 had to be completely closed for more than an hour due to an accident. Around 7 p.m., the driver of a VW Passat skidded on the snow-covered road and crashed into a concrete post. “The driver was not injured in the accident,” said the Aschaffenburg-Hsbach police inspection. But the roadway was soiled by leaking fuel and debris. Leaking engine oil had to be removed by a specialist company. Several fire brigades and the Technical Relief Agency were deployed there.

The B19 was also completely closed for over an hour after a traffic accident on Friday afternoon. Due to the traffic situation, a driver had to brake her car hard. A subsequent driver recognized this too late and slipped onto the car, according to the police. Three other vehicles then drove into the scene of the accident. “The B19 was initially completely closed and then only one lane was passable for almost two hours,” according to the Würzburg police. There was a long backlog, but no one was injured.

Red Cross performed obstetrics on the Autobahn

Twelve traffic accidents occurred in the Kitzingen district between Friday evening and Saturday morning. “These were so-called minor accidents that were due to the weather. Fortunately, nobody was injured,” said the Kitzingen police.

The match between the Wrzburger Kickers and 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the third division was also delayed by 30 minutes due to the adverse weather conditions. The kick-off was at 7:30 p.m. A total of around 6,000 spectators, including around 3,500 guest fans from the Palatinate, watched the game in the stadium on the Dallenberg in almost constant rain and snowfall.

The Bavarian Red Cross in Wrzburg even provides obstetrics that night. A woman went into labor in the area of the A3/A81 motorway junction. “While the alerted emergency doctor was able to fight his way through the broken traffic to the expectant mother, the ambulance only made very slow progress between the stationary trucks,” says Stefan Krger, who is responsible for media work at the BRK. The happy ending: the patient was taken off the autobahn by car and handed over to a waiting ambulance.

The weather service expects more snow and sleet showers

And how will the weather be? According to the German Weather Service, in the afternoon Bavaria will be cloudy with brisk winds and sunny intervals. But towards the evening there could again be occasional rain, sleet and sleet showers. The maximum values are between 4 degrees in some Alpine valleys and 11 degrees in the district of Aschaffenburg. All in all, the weather continues to show its moody side.
