Violent crimes are very rare in Japan. The attack came at a time when security was heightened in Tokyo due to the city’s Olympic Games.
The attack took place in the Setagaya district Tokyo to the west, a few kilometers from the Olympic equestrian site.
Tokyo police on Saturday morning said they had arrested a man over the age of 30 who had injured nine people in a passenger train carriage with a knife.
The Tokyo Fire Department said nine of the 10 wounded were taken to hospitals and a tenth were able to leave on their own. None of the injured had lost consciousness.
The public television company NHK reported that a woman over the age of 20 was seriously injured. The suspect later surrendered to the police in a shop.
The 36-year-old assailant Jusuke Cusima told police that he intended to kill after seeing happy-looking women and that he had chosen targets for good fortune, NHK reported.
He entered a store, admitted to being a suspect, and said he was tired of running away. The store manager called the police when he saw blood stains on the man’s shirt.
The railway company said it had canceled some flights following the attack.
Japan has strict rules on the use of firearms, but there have been occasional violent crimes involving other weapons.
In 2019, a man with two knives killed two people, including one schoolgirl, and injured 17 by attacking a group of schoolgirls waiting at a bus stop. He then committed suicide.
In 2018, a man Japanese was detained in the middle after stabbing one passenger on the high – speed train and injuring two.
