In the 70’s I did “béčko”. Michal Prokop sincerely in a TV documentary

Prokop, his friends and co-workers together create a portrait of a singer who never fit very well into the Czech basin, he was not a scumbag or a hard rocker, he was his own and chose untrodden paths.

He got the first American soul records abroad in the 1960s, which inspired him. It was a “big beat with the breath”, which no one here did. Prokop wanted to sing like a black man and immediately set himself apart from the mainstream.

By imitating Ray Charles or Otis Redding, he gained the attention of critics and fans alike, but worse times came. The Communists did not want an English-singing savage here, and Michal Prokop needed to make a living, so he started working with his friend Hana Zagorová, who meant well, but it didn’t work musically.

Prokop describes it as a period of suffering. He sang stupid music he didn’t believe and did “Hance Béčko”. In the end, he gave it up himself, revived the band Framus, and so the best records were created, such as Dormitory Yesterday, Nothing in the Wrong and Perhaps our children.

He doesn’t hide anything in the film, not even the embarrassing signature of Anticharta, where almost all the artists were at the time. Others, however, made it difficult to construct stories in retrospect, as they allegedly did not sign.

In the 1990s, Prokop opted for politics, but music still won. He has performed to this day, entered the Hall of Fame and recently mentioned that he will be releasing a new album.

The life story of the musician, politician and moderator will be presented by ČT art on Saturday, November 7 at 8:20 p.m.
