In New York, Broadway theaters will remain closed until at least early September

Even less optimistic, many American stages do not plan to reopen before spring 2021.

Broadway theaters will remain closed due to the coronavirus pandemic until at least September 6 and have not yet set a reopening date, the Broadway League trade association announced on Tuesday. All performances in the neighborhood surrounding famous Times Square have been suspended since March 12, after New York Governor Andrew Cuomo banned gatherings.

Never has New York’s famous theater district been closed for so long since its inception at the end of the 19th century. Each week that it is closed, Broadway loses more than $ 30 million in box office receipts.

At the time of the suspension of performances, 31 shows were playing on Broadway and eight more were preparing for their spring debuts. Two productions, those of the pieces Hangmen and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf?, the premiere of which had not yet taken place, announced their final cancellation. Musical comedy Beetlejuice, who was initially scheduled to complete her performances in early June, has also announced that she will not be returning.

Broadway League President Charlotte St. Martin said in a statement working with Broadway professional unions, political and health authorities “to determine the safest way to restart our industry“. Some professionals are already planning a shutdown until 2021.

The highly anticipated revival of the play Plaza Suite, starring in town couple Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker in the lead roles, was officially pushed back a full year on Tuesday, with a premiere now set for March 19, 2021, up from March 13, 2020 so far.

Elsewhere in the United States, several well-known theaters have announced that their programming will not resume until 2021. In Minneapolis, the Guthrie Theater is planning a return in March and a shortened season, until August. In Cleveland, Playhouse Square has postponed until 2021 a series of performances of seven shows already performed on Broadway.
