Referendum on pensions: the motion of the National Rally will be the only one submitted to the vote of the Assembly

The request for a referendum on pensions is unlikely to be adopted by the National Assembly because only the motion tabled by the National Rally (RN) group will be put to the vote of the deputies. This to the great displeasure of the Nupes who denounces a “democratic hijacking”.

On the initiative of the Communists, the elected representatives of the left had deposited their “referendum motion” on January 23, a day before the far-right deputies. Relying on the rules of the Assembly, the deputies of the Nupes affirmed that it alone could be put to the vote, on February 6, the first day of the debates in the Hemicycle on the very controversial project of pension reform.

But the Conference of Presidents of the Assembly, in the absence of case law, decided to draw lots. And it was the RN group, led by Marine Le Pen, who came out on top, we learned from parliamentary sources.

“Scandalous! [La présidente de l’Assemblée] Yaël Braun-Pivet and Macronie change the rules of the Assembly to offer the referendum motion to the RN on a plate”exclaimed in reaction to Twitter the leader of the “rebellious” deputies, Mathilde Panot. “They choose an opposition of comfort”has she added in front of the pressnoting that the Nupes motion had a chance of being adopted.

“It’s a democratic hijacking”added the boss of the communist group, André Chassaigne, indicating that the partners on the left were going to consult to define a « position commune » regarding the motion brought by the RN.

” Out of the question “ to vote for this far-right motion, has already warned the president of the green deputies, Cyrielle Chatelain. And, the Socialist deputies have acted that they would not participate in the vote.

The RN motion must be put to the vote first, if all its signatories are present on February 6. If this were not the case, it would however be possible for the Nupes motion to be put to the vote, again with the need for all the signatories to be present.

Questioned by the press on the challenge of the left, Marine Le Pen affirmed that “the rules have been applied”. The elected Nupes “can get annoyed with luck [du RN au tirage au sort]but against no one else”. “We invite all opposition, without sectarianism, to vote for this text”, added Ms. Le Pen. The boss of the independent group Liot, Bertrand Pancher, said he would vote for it.
