There was a crowd this Saturday, May 22 in the city center of Dijon (Côte-d’Or) to take advantage of the first weekend of deconfinement. The terraces of the bars and restaurants and the shops are full.

France is gradually coming back to life since May 19 and the reopening, in particular of so-called non-essential shops and terraces of bars and restaurants. In Dijon (Côte-d’Or), this Saturday, May 22, passers-by were numerous in the streets of the city center to take advantage of this first weekend of deconfinement.

The crowds even surprised Maud Maignien, the manager of the L’Occitane beauty products store, located rue de la Liberté, the main shopping street in the city center. “The customers are there and are delighted to find the shops open. We expected to have a lot of people, but not at this level”, she told us. Selling on the internet is not to everyone’s taste, and does not allow you to get the same advice or product trail, for example, she recalls.

A little further up the street, the Jules men’s clothing store is seeing the same crowds. Customers are obviously happy to be able to see and try the products again. And it shows in the sales figures. “It’s a bit like the first days of sales, or almost days for Christmas”, according to Laura Bredin, the store manager.

The rain came to spoil the afternoon of shopping. But amateurs will have other days to catch up, if they wish. The prefect of Côte-d’Or authorized, in a decree of May 19 (PDF), the exceptional opening of retail stores throughout the department on Sundays 23 and 30 May and every Sunday in June.
