In Guamanga, crops are dammed due to lack of roads | THE UNIVERSAL

MMore than 500 avocado growing families from the Guamanga village, in the High Mountain of El Carmen de Bolívar, say they are worried because the avocado harvest is approaching and there are no ways to get the product to the municipal seat.

Víctor González Peña, president of the Guamanga Agrocomercial Association, reported that in recent weeks there have been heavy downpours in the area, leaving large puddles on the roads.

In those quagmires, the cars that have tried to reach the Guamanga village have been left stranded and needing the help of the inhabitants to unblock themselves and return.

“This problem has been a lifetime,” he said, “because no mayor has been interested in adapting these roads. What worries us most is that April is approaching, which is the avocado harvest and at the same time winter is getting worse. If something is not done soon, all that harvest will be lost. “

He explained that the road that leads to Guamanga also serves other villages such as Guamanga Centro, Santa Cruz de Mula, Camarón, La Hita, Las Lajas, and Mesa.

“Right now you can work on the roads, because a few light rains are falling; and yet they are complicating automotive access. When April comes, things will be worse ”, insisted González Peña.

He noted that this need has been communicated several times to the Mayor’s Office of El Carmen and the Government of Bolívar, “but since the pandemic entered, it has also become the excuse for administrations. We peasants have organized walks, like at the beginning of last year when we went to the Government of Bolívar. After that, we learned that the officials arrived at La Cansona, but did not approach Guamanga ”.

Adriana Trucco, Bolívar’s Secretary of Agriculture, acknowledged that “in reality there are many weaknesses in matters of tertiary roads in the area, but according to budget capacity, interventions are being organized in coordination with Invías.”

To find out if the Guamanga roads are prioritized, El Universal tried to contact the mayor of El Carmen, Carlos Torres Cohen; and with Bolívar’s Secretary of Infrastructure, Diana Manrique, but it was not possible.
