The ceremony for the 76th anniversary of the liberation of Chartres was held this morning, leaving from Place Châtelet.
The authorities first of all greeted the flags representing the countries that contributed to the liberation of Chartres and the territory, namely France, Great Britain and the United States.
The ceremony continued with the reading by Ladislas Vergne, deputy mayor in charge of memory, of an extract from the municipal archives relating to the liberation of Chartres.
The authorities then paid tribute to the dead by laying wreaths, then the participants marched in procession towards the cathedral to attend the You gods of liberation.
A necessary ceremony
“This commemoration is important to maintain the duty of remembrance, especially when we see what happened in Oradour-sur-Glane recently”, lamented Jacques Mathiau, engaged for twenty-two years in the navy and annoyed by the recent revisionist tags discovered last Friday in the martyr village.
