In August, consumer prices in Latvia decreased by 0.2% over the year

During the month, prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages decreased by 1.2%.

Fresh vegetables (-9.6%) and potatoes (23.4%) had the most significant impact on the decline in the average price level in the group due to seasonal factors.

Prices of poultry meat (-5.6%), milk (-3.3%), pork (-1.9%), pasta (-5.5%), cheese and cottage cheese (-1, 2%). Prices for fresh fruit (+ 3.5%), confectionery (+ 1.1%), butter (+ 3.5%) and fresh or chilled fish (+ 4.8%) increased.

In the group of clothing and footwear, prices decreased on average by 1% during the month.

Under the influence of shares, footwear became cheaper on average by 3.4% and clothing – by 0.5%.

During the month, the average price level of housing-related goods and services decreased by 0.7%, which was mainly influenced by the reduction of the heat energy tariff in Riga, lowering the average heat energy price level by 4.5%. As a result of the shares, materials for housing maintenance and repair became cheaper (-1.1%). Housing rents, on the other hand, increased on average by 1.9%, water supply by 2.6% and sewerage services by 2.7%.

In August, prices for transport-related goods and services decreased on average by 0.6%. Fuel became cheaper by 0.5% during the month, including diesel fuel by 0.6% and petrol by 0.6%, while prices for car gas increased by 0.2%. Prices fell for passenger air transport.

The average price level of leisure and cultural goods and services increased by 0.8% over the month, which was influenced by the rise in prices for personal computers and cameras. Flowers, stationery and drawing supplies were cheaper.

In other consumer groups, the most significant price declines were for personal hygiene and beauty products, household cleaning and care products, wine and beer. In turn, dental services became more expensive.

The largest impact on the change in the average consumer price level in August 2020 compared to August 2019 was the fall in prices for housing-related goods and services, transport-related goods and services, clothing and footwear, as well as the rise in prices for food and non-alcoholic beverages. health care, recreational and cultural goods and services, restaurant and hotel services.

In the group of food and non-alcoholic beverages, prices increased by 2% during the year.

Fresh fruit (+ 23.8%), mainly apples, oranges and pears, had the most significant impact on the increase in the average price level in the group. Prices also increased for dried, salted or smoked meat (+ 7.3%) and meat products (+ 5%). Buckwheat (+ 20.7%), breakfast cereals (+ 12%), confectionery (+ 1.8%), chocolate (+ 3.9%), ice cream (+ 4.7%) and bread (+ 1.2%). In turn, fresh vegetables (-7.1%), potatoes (-15.3%), poultry meat (-3.3%), milk (-5.1%) and dairy products (-1.5%) were cheaper. .

The average price level of clothing and footwear decreased by 0.3% during the year. Prices for clothing fell on average by 0.3%, but for footwear – by 0.1%.

Prices for housing-related goods and services decreased by 4.2%,

mainly affected by falling prices for heat, natural gas, electricity, solid fuels and housing.

In the health care group, the average price level increased by 3.2% over the year, which was mainly influenced by the rise in prices for dental services, general medical practice and medical specialist services. Pharmaceutical products were cheaper.

Prices for transport-related goods and services decreased by 4.3% over the year,

determined by the fall in prices for fuel by 11.5%, mainly for diesel fuel – by 12.1%. Prices for petrol decreased by 11.1%, but for car gas – by 9.4%. During the year, prices increased for road passenger transport, maintenance and repair of personal transport equipment.

Goods and services related to recreation and culture became more expensive by 2% during the year. During the year, the average price level increased for leisure and sports services, flowers, newspapers and magazines.

The average price level of restaurant and hotel services increased by 3% compared to August last year.

The increase in prices was mainly due to catering services, including an average price increase of 2.3% for restaurant and café services and 4.9% for canteen services.

In other consumer groups, the most significant fall in prices during the year was for motor insurance, spirits and beer, while tobacco products, personal hygiene products and beauty products became more expensive.
