In 21 days, UNAM builds a hospital to treat coronavirus

In 21 days, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) built a hospital to serve patients with Covid-19, which will come into operation on May 1, the institution reported.

The medical unit called Temporary Unit Covid-19 will have 240 beds and the capacity to expand the number to 840.

“In 21 days we build a hospital designed so that in the coming weeks, depending on the evolution of the pandemic, it can grow,” said Germán Fajardo, director of the Faculty of Medicine.

By attending the UNAM Responds program, the academic recognized the efforts of various institutions and foundations for the project, which has all the services to care for patients with the virus. The medical unit, he explained, is the one located in the Citibanamex Center.

“The Faculty of Medicine will be in charge of the logistics of the hospital, so the staff in the gray coat will help its operation through management and administration, while the Ministry of Health of Mexico City will provide patient care through the staff in white coats. Many of the doctors hired are university students committed to safeguarding lives, ”he emphasized.

After highlighting the contribution of faculty doctors and nurses, he stressed that in the unit there are several rooms where training has been given in person and remotely since last Monday.

In educational terms, Fajardo Dolci commented that one of the challenges has been that not all students have the tools for distance education and teachers have prepared to give virtual classes: “Upon return, these areas will be strengthened to remain at the forefront “

He mentioned that the faculty has continued with its programs, its five careers and other activities: “Close to 60 doctors resolve doubts about the virus from our call center; In addition, we have the Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health to provide support. ”
