Implementation of Wolbachia Mosquito Breeding in West Jakarta Awaits MoU Finalization with Ministry of Health

Head of the West Jakarta Health Service (Kasudinkes), Erizon Safari, stated that breeding wolbachia mosquitoes in West Jakarta is still waiting for the finalization of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) and the DKI Provincial Government.

“Now it looks like it has entered the final stage, yes. But that’s for launching“West Jakarta can’t yet, because there is no MoU yet,” said Erizon in Jakarta on Tuesday.

He explained that the West Jakarta Health Sub-Department is ready to carry out mosquito breeding as long as there is an agreement between the Provincial Government and the Ministry of Health.

“If there is an MoU, it means the government has agreed, the province and city have agreed. Yes, we will act as government officials who carry out the needs of the order,” said Erizon.

To ensure the readiness of its staff, the West Jakarta Health Department is intensifying training for cadres in the field to place Wolbachia mosquito seeds in predetermined locations, namely Kembangan District.

“We train, even now we are walking on-job training “It’s the same with the community health center as well as the sub-district for a common perception,” said Erizon.

Furthermore, said Erizon, this mosquito breeding method has been proven to be able to stop the circulation of chikungunya and zika through the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

“The bacteria are taken, they are transmitted to mosquitoes so they become wolbachia, they are bred, they lay eggs and become adult mosquitoes. It has been proven that adult mosquitoes containing wolbachia cannot be carriers of chikungunya and zika transmission,” said Erizon.

Regarding public opinion which says that homes or breeding locations for wolbachia mosquitoes are ‘guinea pigs’, Erizon emphasized that determining the location is the authority of the Ministry of Health.

“This means that we are following the government’s regulations. The government has stipulated in the Decree of the Minister of Health the implementation of Wolbachia in five selected cities, including West Jakarta,” said Erizon.

Previously, Erizon said that treating dengue fever with wolbachia-bearing mosquitoes was proven to be 77 percent effective when tested in several areas such as Bantul, Sleman and Yogya.

“This has already been implemented, because pilot project It has been carried out since 2014 in Sleman, Bantul and Jogja. “So because it has been proven to reduce up to 77 percent, it has been implemented in five cities (one of which is West Jakarta),” said Erizon.

It is known that dengue fever cases in West Jakarta from January to August 2023 experienced fluctuations, but tended to decrease.

“In January there were 132 cases, February 94, March 105, April 125, May 95, June 80, July 66, and August 39 cases,” said Erizon.
