Searches are still ongoing in southeastern France and northern Italy action and repair work following the extremely heavy rains that hit the Alpine areas on Friday and Saturday.

The Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera stated that eight dead bodies had been found in Italy after the floods. However, the AFP agency wrote that some of them were in an advanced stage of decomposition, and could be bodies washed out of some cemeteries. The Italian Coast Guard said it would be difficult to identify them.

Rescue workers found two other bodies near the French city of Nice. The dead French shepherd was discovered by an Italian search team, another man died in a car that was swept away by floods in the village of Saint-Martin-Vésubie.

There are at least ten victims, but according to French firefighters, more than two dozen more are still missing. Along with torrential rains on Friday and Saturday, southern France and northern Italy were plagued by severe storms.

Harsh weather has caused millions of euros in damage. The floods swept away several houses, roads and bridges. The streets of the cities were flooded with mud and overturned cars. The flood wave also cut off power supplies. In the Italian village of Tanaro, floods destroyed the cemetery and took away dozens of coffins.

In Italy, the rains hit Aosta Valley and Piedmont the hardest. In the village of Sambughetto, total precipitation for a 24-hour period climbed up to 630 millimeters. In a single day, more than half of the annual rainfall fell in the area. Some regions have declared a state of disaster.

French authorities have sent almost 1,000 firefighters to the worst-affected Alpes-Maritimes department to find the missing and restore communications. More than two dozen schools also closed until further notice.
