Dan Karaty has revealed on his social media that he is an alcoholic. “For years I lied to myself, my friends and my family. I avoided help because I was too proud, ashamed and afraid. Now I’m tired of hiding.”

The American choreographer and television personality wrote a message on his Facebook and Instagram page in which he talks about his fight against his alcohol addiction. “Untreated anxiety and alcoholism are things too many people struggle with alone. My life became untenable, until I reached the bottom. Finally, I sought the help that me and my family needed. Now I live in the now, take each day as it comes and am grateful for all my blessings.” Karaty wants to be open and transparent from now on and hopes that his story can help others in the same situation.
The choreographer has had a difficult time. In the midst of the first corona wave, he suffered a serious eye infection, after which he slid into depression. “I became depressed, entered a very dark period and found myself in a dark place. That struggle in and with myself was heavy. I found that the dividing line between work and private life was becoming increasingly blurred, something that ultimately also affected my family,” he told the Dutch weekly Privé.
Dan Karaty became known to us as a jury member in So You Think You Can Dance. Later he was also on the jury of Dansdate and from Belgium’s Got Talent. He was replaced in the most recent season of the talent show.
