Like all vaccines, you may experience some side effects after vaccination.

There may be pain or swelling at the injection site, and possibly a feeling of fever, fatigue, or a headache.

For most people, the side effects of this vaccine can be very mild or moderate, and last 1-2 days.

However, for some people the side effects can make them feel like they have the flu, or affect their ability to carry out daily activities.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), fever is a common side effect of vaccination.

So, it is important to know what to do when we have a fever after getting the Covid-19 vaccine.

“When vaccinated, the immune system is activated to build a protective response against viral proteins,” said Dr. Sanjeev Jain, MD, a specialist in immunology and internal medicine at Columbia Asthma and Allergy Clinic.

Because the immune system is turned on by vaccines, the body responds to it, often by heating itself from within.

“When inflammatory mediators spread throughout the body, we can also experience fever, muscle aches and headaches,” says Dr. Jain.

However, if there is no fever, that doesn’t mean the immune system isn’t responding well to the vaccine.

According to Cleveland Clinic, more than 50 percent of people who are vaccinated have no side effects at all, but the Covid-19 vaccine can still be 94 percent effective in their bodies.

When to worry?

Dr. Jain said, we don’t need to look at post-vaccination fever in the context of other side effects, to find out when fever is a cause for concern.

“The side effects of normal fever will usually develop the same day we receive the vaccine.”

“And it may be accompanied by other symptoms that are often reported, such as pain at the injection site and swollen lymph nodes in the armpit of the injection site,” he said.

But other side effects can be a signal for us to see a doctor.

“If you develop additional symptoms that are not related to vaccines such as neck pain, diarrhea, shortness of breath, or cough, then it must be followed up,” he said.

How to treat post-vaccination fever?

Usually, post-vaccine side effects tend to go away on their own after a few days.

However, Dr. Jain said, there are ways to take care of ourselves if we feel uncomfortable after vaccination.

“If the fever rises above 39 degrees Celsius, it may be appropriate to use drugs to reduce fever,” he told Bustle.

We also have to make sure the body gets adequate sleep and water intake.

“Adequate hydration and rest may also benefit patients with post-vaccination fever,” said Dr. Jain.
