“If classes continue on WhatsApp, 50% of the students will drop out,” warns Mario Alas

Tegucigalpa – The Educational Observatory of the Francisco Morazán National Pedagogical University (UPNFM), warned that continuing classes by WhatsApp runs the risk that 50 percent of already enrolled students drop out of their classes.

The coordinator of the observatory, Mario Alas Solís, said that the 2020 data was worrying because it was calculated that at the end of it, 20 percent of the students left the education system.

In that sense, he pointed out that this becomes a challenge for the authorities since if classes continue to be taught by WhatsApp and without teacher-student interaction, it is projected that 50 percent of the student population would leave their classes.

He indicated that the educational authorities are distributing guides that will serve at least so that parents do not spend on refills.

He added that if semiprensencialidad increases in rural areas, that will help to reduce school dropouts.

The official recommended that the educational authorities look for corrective measures to prevent 50 percent of the school population from dropping out at the end of the year. IR
