Subaru Solterra – Subaru’s new electric car for Norway: How similar is the Toyota bZ4X?

(Elbil24): There have been high expectations for Subaru’s new electric car Solterra. The electric SUV in the D-segment has been developed in collaboration with Toyota.

Subaru itself has promised a car with features that will exceed the expectations customers may have for battery-powered cars.

Elbil24 recently wrote about Solterra’s twin Toyota bZ4x, which was made ready for order from 1 April. Now it’s Subaru’s turn to provide pricing and delivery information.

When will the Subaru Solterra arrive in Norway?

Subaru has now opened for you to order Solterra. The first cars will be delivered to customers in June.

– This will be a real all-weather car, perfect for active Norwegians. It is made to emerge in a Norwegian nature with harsh driving conditions around the country, all year round, says general manager Torbjørn Lie in Subaru Norway, and adds:

– We continue and further develop the Subaru DNA from well-known models such as Forester, Outback and XV in the new e-SUV. The focus is still on safety, power and space, comfort and accessibility.

How much does a Subaru Solterra cost?

Subaru Solterra has a starting price from 479,000 kroner. In addition, there is shipping and delivery costs.

Solterra comes in three different versions – all with four-wheel drive:

  • Nordic: From 479,000 kroner (plus shipping and delivery)
  • Limited: From 500,000 kroner (plus shipping and delivery)
  • Sports: From 510,000 kroner (plus shipping and delivery).

What is the difference between Nordic, Limited and Sport?

In addition to the difference in price, the different editions are distinguished by different range and equipment level.

For example, if you choose to upgrade from Nordic to Limited, you get steering wheel heating, rear seat heating, electrically adjustable front passenger seat, wireless charging of mobile, upgraded stereo, larger rims and automatic tilting of side mirrors when the car is reversed.

If you choose the Sport version, you get a panoramic glass roof. Sport og Limited has a higher curb weight (2035 kg) than Nordic (2010 kg), but less luggage space:

  • Nordic: 452 liters of luggage space
  • Limited: 441 liters of luggage space
  • Sport: 441 liters of luggage space

What is the range of the Subaru Solterra?

Subaru states the expected range according to the established WLTP standard (23 degrees Celsius).

  • Nordic: 466 km (WLTP)
  • Limited: 419 km (WLTP)
  • Sport: 416 km (WLTP)

As mentioned earlier, Limited and Sport are heavier than Nordic. The two most expensive models also have 20-inch wheels, which together with higher curb weight explain why Limited and Sport have a shorter range.

What are the similarities between Nordic, Limited and Sport?

Apart from price, range, luggage space, panoramic glass roof and equipment, most are the same between the three editions.

Nordic, Limited and Sport all come with four-wheel drive (AWD). The editions are built the same from scratch and have a very good ground clearance (21 cm).

Important specifications:

  • Battery capacity: 71.4 kWt
  • Effekt: 314 hk / 337 Nm
  • 0-100 km / h: 6.9 seconds
  • Top speed: 160 km / h
  • Fast charging: Up to 150 kW

What is the difference between a Subaru Solterra and a Toyota bZ4X?

There is very little that separates the two cars. Solterra and bZ4X are built on the same platform, but while Toyota calls it e-TNGA, Subara has given the platform the name e-SGP. The platform has been developed in collaboration between the two car brands. For those who are wondering: Toyota owns 20 percent of Subaru and is the largest shareholder in the company.

Therefore, several will claim that this is the same car, but with a different logo. How similar they actually are, we only get a proper answer when we have the two cars together.

However, there are some differences worth mentioning. While the Subaru Solterra only comes with four-wheel drive, you can choose rear-wheel drive on the Toyota bZ4X. This also gives a cheaper entrance to the cars, as rear-wheel drive is priced cheaper. The cheapest bZ4X version Active (RWD) is as much as NOK 67,600 cheaper than Solterra’s entry-level model Nordic (AWD).

It is more interesting to compare the Subaru Solterra Nordic with the four-wheel drive version of the Toyota bZ4X. Here, Toyota’s model is NOK 40,500 cheaper, despite the fact that the cars have the same range. The reason is probably that the equipment package for Solterra Nordic is better.

In that sense, it is probably fairest to compare Solterra Nordic with the bZ4X AWD Active Tech, which costs NOK 482,500. Then it differs only 3250 kroner – in favor of Toyota.
