Id Software removes Denuvo’s anti-cheat tool from PC version Doom Eternal – Gaming – News

In itself I agree. Cheaters are terrible and it is unfortunate that it is necessary to do anything about it at all. Pathetic figures who apparently cannot stand their loss.

However, you do get something here that you would call a police state in real life. Everything is checked and you are constantly monitored. In addition, it broadens the effect, since the driver is installed on PC and thus basically always has access, even if the developer claims that it is only active if the game for which it is installed is running, like here. Only one bug needs to be found in Denuvo and your entire system is exposed. And I have no more confidence in the developers at Irdeto than in Microsoft.

All the more reason to act against microtransactions, especially trade between players. In WoW, that’s part of the problem – you can freely send gold and items to each other. So that makes it easy to pay for things with real money through a parallel marketplace and trade them in-game, and that gives a lot more incentive for bots and other malpractice – you can actually make “real” money with it. This effect will hardly play a role for non-marketable cosmetics.

In modern games you usually have progression systems which makes it more attractive to cheat. In-game credits, for example, or unlocks from outfits, vehicles or weapons. Cheating is a problem created by the developer of the game, which should not make the players the victims.

The problem is that it’s simply cheaper for publishers to pay a few tons (million) for something like DAC than to hire a host of moderators to detect and ban cheaters. And with that it is then sold to the players under the guise of “you don’t want cheaters in your game, do you?” Just as in real life, all kinds of draconian measures are implemented under one of the hobby horses of terrorism or pedophilia, or more current, corona. There are acceptable alternatives that are less invasive, but that just costs a bit more.
