IC doctor Diederik Gommers: ‘I have never experienced this before’

Gommers, chairman of the Dutch Association for Intensive Care and IC doctor at Erasmus MC in Rotterdam, told the TV program Op1 last night.

Situation in Brabant under control

Recently, more than 800 patients from Brabant have been spread across the country. In Brabant, the situation is now under control, according to Gommers. “But suppose there is an outbreak in Amsterdam, because many people have been in the Vondelpark with good weather, then we will not make it.”

Gommers admits to ‘shed a lot of tears lately’. He says he has never experienced anything like this before and is especially afraid that there is not enough capacity in intensive care.

Make choices

“You don’t want to be in a position to choose,” says the IC doctor. He says doctors aren’t trained for that either. Those who have worked in the military or in the tropics may have had to make choices.

“But I’ve never experienced it and a lot of the doctors have never experienced it.”

Although the number of admissions fell this weekend, Gommers is careful. “The forecasts are still that we will continue to grow. We still have room for 500 patients, so when the number returns to 50 a day, we’ll be there in ten days.”

Adhere to measures

Last week at the table at Jinek, Gommers also expressed his concerns about the number of patients on the ICU. He then emphasized that the Dutch have control over whether doctors should make choices.

“If the increase remains limited, we will survive on the ICs. That is only possible if everyone adheres to the measures.”
