Former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo revealed that he joked with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on the subject of “assassination of Kim Jong-un” when he visited North Korea for a preliminary visit to the North American summit in 2018.

Fox News obtained and reported excerpts from Secretary Pompeo’s memoir, which contained this content.

The memoir will be published on the 24th.

In the book, former Secretary Pompeo described the first time he met Chairman Kim in 2018, when he visited North Korea as a special envoy when he was director of the Central Intelligence Agency.

“This little, sweaty, sinister man tried all his charms to change the awkward atmosphere, but he was fit for a murderer,” he recalled.

“Chairman Kim said, ‘I didn’t expect you to show up. I know you tried to kill me,'” Pompeo said.

He said, “I was taken aback by the unexpected situation, but I responded humorously, saying, ‘Chairman, I’m still trying to kill you.’ In the photo taken right after the conversation, Kim Jong-un is still smiling. He seemed convinced that I was joking.”

Former Secretary Pompeo visited Pyongyang several times to coordinate the North Korea-U.S. summit, including a revisit to North Korea as secretary of state about 40 days after the special envoy’s visit.

Former Secretary Pompeo, who is weighing running for president next year, said he would announce whether he would run this spring.
