Peter Bosz knew the season before he started working for Ajax that he would become the new trainer in the ArenA the following year. Bosz, who was a trainer at Israel’s Maccabi Tel Aviv at the time, had secret conversations with Marc Overmars to discuss a deal.
Even before Bosz left for Israel, he had first contact with Overmars, who gave him a subtle hint about the future. “Overmars sent me a message: something along the lines of drawing no longer than one year”, the trainer tells in conversation with RK College Tour. “I thought: where did this suddenly come from. I started thinking, why does he send something like that?
Bosz eventually left for Israel, but included a special clause in his contract. “I had put in that contract that I would be allowed to go to Ajax for a fixed amount after six months,” he continues. “When I went there, I briefly had contact with Overmars. Then he told me that Frank de Boer had to let him know before 1 March whether he would still want to be the trainer of Ajax that year.”
Phone call
A phone call from Overmars soon followed. “Marc called me on March 2 that Frank had said he would not continue the following year. He said I want to come to Israel to talk to you to see if we can work it out together. I talked to each other secretly and I succeeded, because it never came out. I knew on March 3 that I would be the new coach of Ajax the following year, “Bosz concludes.
