Together with Alberto Zangrillo, Matteo Bassetti is one of those doctors who have faced the coronavirus in the field and therefore try to reassure citizens about the growing data of daily infections. Director of the infectious disease clinic of the San Martino hospital in Genoa, Bassetti has long declared that the new cases cannot be compared to those of March and April, since Covid has lost viral load compared to then. To explain the new evolution of the epidemic, Bassetti drew up some tables: “I analyzed the official world data of the WHO to see how the increase in infections in the various states has influenced hospitalizations and deaths in this country”. It emerged that “both the countries that have used more severe countermeasures against the pandemic (Italy, Spain, Germany) and the countries that have used much milder methods (USA, India), where the virus has practically got out of hand, the percentage of deaths dropped significantly“. These data lead Bassetti to formulate two considerations: “The new infected are better than the former, either because they do not get sick at all (it is no coincidence that asymptomatic patients increase) or because the disease is much more manageable from a medical point of view. In any case, the data seem encouraging to me ”.
