A sedan that asserts itself

With its false Toyota Prius airs, the Hyundai Ioniq clearly shows its vocation as a green car. Slightly retouched, it now displays a more assertive face in its electric version with its false metal gray grille decked out with two variable opening hatches, its more aggressive LED headlights and its revised rear. A rather discreet silhouette for this family sedan of 4.47 meters.

Under its hood, the Hyundai group’s engine gains 16 hp (136 hp) and displays a generous torque of 295 Nm (in Sport mode) which offers it good revivals, like any good electric, but without seeking pure performance (around 10 s from 0 to 100). Its strong point is rather to be found in its efficiency. The novelty is on the side of the battery, which now reaches a fair value today of 38.3 kWh (+ 36%) and receives liquid cooling for better thermal control.

With its new 7.2 kW on-board charger, it takes 54 minutes to charge to 80% when the vehicle is connected to a 100 kW DC terminal (57 min with 50 kW). In alternating current, count a little more than 6 hours. Hyundai is very dynamic in its promotion of electric power and offers a 1-year subscription to the KiWhi charging station network.

Small battery, high efficiency

Consumption in the combined cycle is given for 13.8 kWh / 100 km, which is close to what we have seen, enough to display a reasonable 311 km of combined autonomy. With 1.6 tons on the scale, the Ioniq enjoys the advantages of its mid-size battery and its handling is pleasant, designed for family use. The advanced aerodynamics of its body (Cx of 0.25) and its efficient engine also contribute to its good results.

The setting of regenerative power on 4 levels (one in freewheel) by paddles on the steering wheel is original, easy to use and quite fun. In the most intense mode, it is possible to bring it to a stop by simply lifting the foot, without touching the brakes, the way of the Nissan e-Pedal. Smart regeneration takes into account the car in front to better anticipate.

In addition to that, 4 driving modes are possible, from frugal Eco + to Sport mode. We also liked the efficiency and smoothness of the adaptive cruise control system.
