Hustle and bustle on “Deadline Day”: Castling millions in Wolfsburg

On the last day of the winter transfer period, there is still a lot going on in the Bundesliga. VfL Wolfsburg alone has a turnover of around 30 million.

Düsseldorf – The much-discussed return of Max Kruse to VfL Wolfsburg was the starting signal for a hectic final spurt on “Deadline Day”.

The really big names and expensive transfers of millions were not widespread, but between Sunday afternoon and Monday evening there was a lot of activity at many clubs in the Bundesliga.

The Champions League participant Wolfsburg, who fell into the relegation zone, even caused a real castling in the storm around ex-national player Kruse and moved the most money. Kruse (33) is said to cost five million euros, Danish international striker Jonas Wind (22) from FC Copenhagen even twelve.

In return, the sale of goalscorer Wout Weghorst to Burnley reportedly brought in 14 million. With the 29-year-old, however, the wolves lose the second-best scorer in their Bundesliga history after Edin Dzeko. In 118 appearances, he scored 59 times. Weghorst was presented with great fanfare at the bottom of the Premier League. Among other things, with a “Jurassic Park” video: When the Dutchman comes to town, the water in the glasses trembles, at the end he greets with a loud primal scream.

Borussia Monchengladbach

Borussia Mönchengladbach will still receive a few hoped-for millions for the free transfer Denis Zakaria from Juventus Turin in the summer – apparently between five and eight. On Monday morning, Juve aggressively tweeted numerous photos of the Swiss doctor’s medical check-up, whose signing of a contract until 2026 seemed a formality. A few hours later, Borussia announced the transfer as official. Despite the much-noticed withdrawal of sports director Max Eberl a few days earlier, the deal still went through. “Because in the end, from our point of view, the economic conditions were right, we approved the transfer,” commented Vice President Rainer Bonhof.

Former world champion Matthias Ginter, on the other hand, remains in Gladbach and will now switch to a new club free of charge in the summer. The most promising candidate is Inter Milan, where national team colleague Robin Gosens switched from Atalanta Bergamo for around 22 million euros this winter.

Hertha BSC

At Hertha BSC, the partially expected final offensive failed to materialize. On Monday, the capital club, which was still in the relegation battle despite investor millions, made its fourth transfer this winter with the Frenchman Kélian Nsona from the French second division club SM Caen and then declared the efforts over. Sports director Fredi Bobic will certainly be active again in the summer.

1. FC Cologne

Meanwhile, 1. FC Köln loaned the 18-year-old central defender Bright Akwo Arrey-Mbi from FC Bayern on Monday, and VfB Stuttgart loaned the Portuguese U21 international striker Tiago Tomas (19) from Sporting Lisbon. Union Berlin signed Paderborn’s Sven Michel to replace Kruse in the afternoon, while Arminia Bielefeld signed American left-back George Bello. Borussia Dortmund hoped to be able to hand over the former first-choice goalkeeper Roman Bürki to FC Lorient in France, and midfield talent Tobias Raschl (21) is moving to bottom Greuther Fürth.

From Monday evening, the clubs can only sign players without a club. On the other hand, their professionals are still allowed to change in leagues in which the transfer window is still open. These include Austria (until February 7th), Turkey (February 8th), Switzerland (February 15th), Russia (February 22nd) and the USA, where the season does not start until February 26th and lasts until April transfers can be made.
