The Hungarian government announced on Tuesday that it intends to lift the state of emergency imposed in the country to curb the spread of the new Corona virus on the twentieth of June, knowing that it was accused of using the epidemic to strengthen its powers.
“A bill calling on the government to end the state of emergency will be submitted to parliament today,” Justice Minister Judit Varga wrote on Facebook, adding that “with the passage of this law, the state of emergency in Hungary will be lifted on the 20th of June.”
The emergency law, approved on March 30, gave National Prime Minister Victor Urban the power to rule by decree until his government announced the end of the epidemic.
In this context, more than a hundred decrees were issued, some of which stipulated the limitation of municipal authorities and their financial capabilities to fight the epidemic.
The police also investigated dozens of people after they published criticism of how to deal with the epidemic.
On the national and European levels, voices have been accused accusing Urban of using the crisis to weaken democracy in his European Union member country.
The European Commission hoped in the beginning of May that the targeted Hungary since September 2018 will return with judicial procedures, accusing it of violating the founding values of the European Union, “to the club of countries whose democracy is inevitable.”
Budapest has continued to reject criticism.
“In recent months, the Hungarian government has been attacked on the basis of unfounded allegations, but misleading information about us once again turns out to be wrong,” Judit Varga wrote on Tuesday.
It demanded that the opposition “apologize for launching a smear campaign instead of cooperating in combating the virus.”
On Tuesday, Hungary (9,8 million people) officially counted 3,771 new cases of coronavirus, including 499 deaths.
