Hungarian President Urges Ukraine to Begin Peace Talks

Hungarian President Katalin Nowak called on Ukraine to start peace talks during a meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv. About this the Hungarian leader informed in an interview with Index.

“The fighting has been going on for a year and a half, and I do not see such a military solution that would lead to a long-term peace. That is why it is necessary to sit down at the negotiating table. I expressed this strong opinion to the President [Украины] both publicly and in private,” she said.

Novak added that during the meeting she also expressed her readiness to join the negotiations.

Zelensky presented a “peace formula” in the fall of 2022, according to which Ukraine must preserve its territorial integrity. Moscow called Kyiv’s plan unrealistic.

The Russian authorities have repeatedly pointed out the impossibility of negotiations due to Kyiv’s refusal at the legislative level to dialogue with Moscow. At the end of July, the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov declaredthat Russia remains open to negotiations, which, according to him, cannot be said about Ukraine. As the Kremlin spokesman noted, Kyiv maintains an “irreconcilable position”, even being “in a rather difficult situation.”
