Hungarian Border Town of Legrad Offers Nearly Free Homes to Increase Population

The Hungarian border town of Legrad is surrounded by picturesque meadows and dense forests. It once boasted the status of the second largest population in Croatia, until it became a border town with little transport connection to other cities.

A little over 2,000 inhabitants now live there. This number is about half of what it was 70 years ago.

The offer of nearly free homes, known as the “houses for a penny” policy, is part of the small town’s efforts to increase its population. The initiative was first launched in 2018 and has apparently been successful, local media “HRT” notes.

True, not everyone will be able to use this offer. Applicants must be under the age of 45, in a partnership, without a criminal record, and they cannot already own another property in Croatia.

The initiative has resulted in success – there are more children in Legrad than five years ago, so a kindergarten is now being built in the town.

The available houses do need repair, but the local authority is ready to help with that as well.

When 19 houses were put up for sale at this price in 2021, the local government offered to pay approximately 3.5 thousand euros with the necessary repairs, the “Reuters” news agency reported. True, the residents had to agree to stay there for at least the next 15 years. It is not yet clear whether this condition also applies to houses that are sold this year.
