A new procedure stipulates that a counting difference of more than 2 percent requires new research. Following a request from a special committee that checks the election results, the House of Representatives voted for a recount last Saturday. It took place that same day. Almost all counting discrepancies have been corrected.
The investigation must demonstrate ‘how this situation could have arisen’ and what can be learned from it. It must also become clear whether the working method used and the protocols for counting and recounting the votes can be further improved.
The House of Representatives supported a request from MP Pieter Omtzigt to investigate the course of events. De Jonge writes in a letter to the House that he also believes that an investigation should be conducted and is having this done by an external agency. The research will be included in the general evaluation of the elections, which is expected to be presented to the House of Representatives no later than April 1.
