Snapchat is a mobile application for Android and iOS devices. One of its core concepts is that any image, video, or message you send, by default, will be available to the recipient for only a short time before it becomes inaccessible. This temporary or ephemeral nature of the application was originally designed to encourage a more natural flow of interaction.

With the Snapchat Sounds feature, you can choose popular music or even create your own sounds to insert into snapshots. This guide will help you get started adding and giving your stories and messages a musical touch.

Launch Snapchat on your mobile device. Then take a photo or video by pressing the circular shutter icon.

From here, tap on the music note button on the right side of your screen.

A menu with some columns will appear. The first “Featured” list contains a curated selection of popular songs to choose from.

The second column “Mood” contains a similar selection, chosen to reflect various dispositions. We will cover the third column in a moment.

Tap the play buttons to preview a sound, then tap a song to add it to your plugin. At the bottom of the screen, select the part of the song you would like to present by dragging the sound wave to the left or right to grab the desired passage. For photos, the duration is a maximum of 10 seconds, depending on how long you have set the snapshot to last. As for videos, the duration is equal to the length of the video.

At this point, you can add additional items to finish your snap, then hit the “Send To” button in the lower right corner to send it to friends or set it as your story.

The last column, titled “My Sounds”, allows you to create and save your own audio clips. To create your own sound, tap the “+” icon.

Once you’re ready, select the microphone symbol once to start recording and a second time to stop.

Alternatively, you can press and hold to start recording and release to stop. Its sound can have a maximum duration of 60 seconds.

Please note that songs cannot be recorded. If Snapchat detects music in a recording, a pop-up window takes over the screen and blocks the recording for reasons of possible copyright liability.

When it’s done, it will take you to a preview page to add the finishing touches. Create a title for your new sound and choose if you want to make it public or not. As mentioned above, there is no current way to search for sounds, so this option is largely ineffective at the time of writing. However, checking this box will likely make your sound visible to others in a future update.

Finally, use the preview window to trim your clip as needed, dragging the left and right anchors appropriately.

Save your sound to add it to the “My sounds” column.

Tap on the newly added sound to insert it into as many snapshots as your heart desires by following the same steps mentioned above.

If you receive a snap with a song, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to bring up a details window containing information about the artist, song title, and key art.

The “Play this song” button will display a list of links on popular streaming platforms where you can listen to it in its entirety.
