How the new Würzburg district administrator wants to tackle his task

Titus Hay (Afd) is new to the district council. The general practitioner from Neubrunn was born in 1949. He was the oldest of the 69 district councilors present at the constituent meeting of the district council on Monday and had the task of taking the oath of service from the new district administrator Thomas Eberth (CSU). So the law on local electoral officials wants it.

District councilors did not let AfD politicians finish

Hay took the opportunity to address a video that shows AfD officials at an election campaign stand in downtown Würzburg. Many see the incitement of sedition fulfilled in the recording because AfD politicians have their say in the film who want a “homogeneous people” and divide Jews, Christians and Muslims into blocks. Jews are stigmatized in the video as a block that has a lot of economic and cultural influence. Würzburg’s mayor Christian Schuchardt and others have therefore filed charges with the public prosecutor for incitement. The AfD district chairman resigned shortly thereafter.

Hay spoke of a “misjudgment” by the district chairman. But he did not get much further with his statements. When he started to speak about Sharia law (the term is used for Islamic law in today’s parlance), the room became audibly restless. Various district councilors expressed their displeasure and asked Hay to speak on the matter. He then promptly interrupted his speech and took the oath of office from Eberth.

Close cooperation with the city of Würzburg

Eberth wants to tackle his new task “bravely but with humility”. The focus of the first ten days in office was on the corona pandemic and its effects on public life. Eberth thanked the employees of the district office and municipal company, the emergency services, aid organizations and in the clinics. “What has been achieved here is sensational.”

The 44-year-old, who governed the fortunes of the Kürnach community as mayor for twelve years, is optimistic about his job. He wants the district council to find more “public respect and attention” and has decided to meet with the district councils for meetings in the villages of the district. Eberth also wants to establish an inter-communal committee “stadt.land.wü” in close cooperation with the city of Würzburg. Eberth then swore in 29 new district councilors who were elected to the 70-member committee in the local elections.

District President Eugen Ehmann spoke of a “political generation change” at the top of the district. This change of office was not normal due to Corona. For Eberth, it went from zero to 150 percent. “But an experienced business economist who was the mayor of an up-and-coming community for twelve years doesn’t shake something like that,” said Ehmann and wished him “the little handful of luck that a district administrator with extensive experience needs”.
