How do you choose the candidates?
With a sense. Before I interview people, I also make up my own mind. The experience of the “scene”, where I mainly made portraits, helps me. The protagonists were particularly important. The mix is also important – we have 54 people for the entire season, with the men and women equally represented.
How much do you give people and how much comes from them?
If the ideas do not come from the people themselves, you notice that. Some are a bit nervous when shooting because they also have to tell something about themselves. You don’t get on the show by simply saying: “I’m single. Take me ”without revealing anything. I then try to loosen them up, which I manage quite well.
Do you understand that people talk so frankly about their private life on television? You stand on stage for good and bad.
That is an important sentence. The show belongs to the singles. We offer them the stage and everyone perceives it differently. If you just think about what the neighbors are saying, it will be difficult. This is how you get no further in life. But of course I find it brave that they do it.
Do you sometimes have to protect them from yourself?
Sometimes you have to see how someone comes across. If a single is weird or quirky, then you can show it. You just shouldn’t show a person in a different way than he is in reality.
