How sensitive is the iPhone 12 to scratch?

iPhone 12 scratches: in this video it is tested

At the iPhone 12series it is YOU AREscreen behind a new type of material that can no longer be called glass. It is a combination of glass and ceramic, with properties of both materials. The special nano-ceramic crystals are located within a grid of glass. Apple especially emphasized that the new material performs four times better when dropped. But nothing was said about the scratch resistance. Meanwhile, the YouTube channel JerryRigEverything has tried with special tools to make as many scratches as possible – so you don’t have to do it yourself. It turned out that nothing has changed compared to last year: the iPhone 12 is no more or less sensitive to scratches.

This is of course not a scientific test, but in the absence of anything better it still gives a good impression of how sensitive the screen really is. The YouTuber used tools of different hardness on the screen of the iPhone 12 Pro, which is identical to the other models in terms of screen material. In Mohs hardness test, only tools harder than the screen can cause scratches. The result is a hardness of level 6. At
level 7 deeper scratches occur.

Then got earlier iPhonemodels have the same scratch treatment, with roughly the same results. Also with the iPhone 11, iPhone XR in iPhone XS Max scratches were created at level 6. Incidentally, this is the same with the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra: scratches also occur when you scratch them with Mohs hardness level 6.

Ceramic Shield does not offer extra protection against scratches, but you can at least know for sure that it is not more sensitive to scratches. If you previously used a screen protector, you can do the same with the iPhone 12. What has in any case improved is the sensitivity to fall damage. A lot of YouTube videos have already appeared in which the device is thrown to the ground and it appears that indeed the screen breaks less quickly. This is not only due to the new material, but also to the design under curved edges. The curved glass of the previous models would sometimes break when it hit the ground. However, the iPhone 12series of dents appear in the metal edges around the screen.

JerryRigEverything’s video also shows that the sides of the device can easily be scratched if you go over it with sharp objects such as a sharp knife. This also applies to the camera lenses. Most things you have in your pocket will not be that sharp: no one walks with a folded pocket knife in their pocket.
