How Photosynthesis Results Circulate throughout the Plant: Explained

KOMPAS.com – Photosynthesis is carried out in the leaves, the results are distributed to all parts of the plant. Why can the results of photosynthesis circulate throughout the plant?

The results of photosynthesis can circulate throughout the plant because they are circulated by the phloem tissue through a translocation process, here is the explanation!

Leaves are organs that perform photosynthesis to produce food in the form of sugar.

Sugar which is the result of photosynthesis must be distributed to all parts of the plant.

Because all parts of plants need food, but cannot carry out photosynthesis like leaves.

The results of photosynthesis in the form of sugar in the leaves accumulate in the phloem.

Reporting from The Science Hive, sugar enters the phloem through companion cells and sieve tubes by active transport.

The accumulation of sugar reduces the potential for solutes to cause water to diffuse (carry out osmosis) from nearby xylem channels into the phloem.

Reporting from Organismal Biology, the movement of water into the phloem creates the potential for high pressure or high turgor pressure in the phloem.

As a result, water containing the products of photosynthesis is forced to move down the pressure gradient. This is where water carries the results of photosynthesis from the leaves to all parts of the plant.

Reporting from Biology LibreTexts, sugar is then released by the stem and root cortex cells to be consumed by plant parts that need it or converted into starch for food storage.

The release of sugar from the phloem leaves water that tends to be pure and causes the osmotic pressure in the phloem to decrease.

The hydrostatic pressure gradient then draws water back from the phloem into nearby xylem channels.

All of these processes will then start again when the sugars resulting from photosynthesis enter the phloem to be distributed to all parts of the plant.
