The hashtags # Anti2010 has more than 40 million views on social networks. Grade 6 students born in 2010 are targeted by this smear campaign. Even to the point that the Minister of National Education published a video on Thursday to encourage college students to be benevolent. Mail was also sent to schools to warn about the phenomenon.

Taken aback, the parents of these students discover through their children the extent of the phenomenon. They often find themselves helpless in knowing how to help their children overcome it.

Between parents and children, different uses of digital tools

“It is true that it is complicated because there is a generational gap in the use of digital tools”, recognizes Margot Déage, doctor in sociology, specialist in education and digital.

Indeed, parents and children live in two completely separate worlds, whether in everyday life or digital life. In the latter, parents will favor social networks like Facebook, while no 6th grade student uses this platform.

A study conducted by YouGov published on Sept. 7 showed that nearly 41% of children aged 8 to 11 had an account on TikTok, Snapchat or Instagram, even though they weren’t supposed to be on social media before 13 years old.

How can parents help their children?

Margot Déage lists several ways for parents to act on the issue. The first: stay open to discussion. According to the doctor, “there are a lot of parents who reject the social networks of young people because they do not understand anything”, whereas it should be said to themselves that it is “a normal way of life”.

“As an individual, do not hesitate to remind your children that they can report content that disturbs them,” continues Margot Déage. She stresses that often, it is incitement to hatred or to strike 2010. “TikTok reacts quite well to reports,” she said.

Finally, “if your child is personally targeted, you can call 3018, which is the e-Childhood association, who can also support your children if they are in difficulty or in a situation of bullying, ”concludes Margot Déage.
