Vitamin C is an essential nutrient to maintain the health of the body, and doctors have always been urging in recent times to eat it through foods rich in it, especially in light of the spread of the Corona virus, due to its immune-boosting properties.

Ignorance of how much vitamin C the body needs, and not getting it, can cause problems and dangerous side effects for the body.

In this regard, Dr. Syed Hammad – Professor of Nutrition at the National Institute of Nutrition, explains that the daily requirement of an individual’s body of vitamin C ranges from 40 to 60 milligrams, indicating that the proportion of each person differs from the other, as children differ from adults or the elderly, so every body has needs A certain amount does not exceed this percentage.

Hammad told “Masrawy” that everyone can easily get his daily needs to ensure that he takes up his vitamin C needs and does not need any supplements, by consuming fresh vegetables and fruits daily, as they are two main sources for him.

And on vegetables rich in vitamin C, he explains: “Among them are green leafy vegetables that have a dark green color – pepper of all kinds, whether colors or green – tomatoes.”

On fruits, he confirms that all of them are sources of vitamin C, but guava is rich in them, followed by citrus fruits, oranges and tangerines, in addition to lemon, which is a good source for it.

Hammad noted that there are symptoms that appear on people who neglect their needs of vitamin C, and they are as follows, explaining that they differ from the person who gets small amounts to the person who completely neglects them:

Teeth and gum problems:

One of the common symptoms of vitamin C deficiency is redness, swelling and bleeding of the gums. Vitamin C deficiency leads to weak and inflamed blood vessels in the gum tissue.

Bruises and cuts

Vitamin C deficiency leads to slow and delayed healing of wounds. Taking it in sufficient proportions increases the rate of healing from wounds and does not take long.

Exposure to colds

A person who does not get enough vitamin C is at greater risk of colds and influenza, as his immunity is lower.

-Iron deficiency

A person who does not get his vitamin C needs will show symptoms of iron deficiency, “anemia”, as vitamin C has a role in absorbing iron.

Scurvy

It is a symptom that appears for severe and persistent deficiencies that last up to months of vitamin C, where a disease called scurvy appears, which causes more problems in the teeth and gums, where you have permanent bleeding, in addition to the loose teeth to become worn out or separated.

In addition to the appearance of symptoms in those who suffer from a deficiency of their needs of vitamin C, also when taking an overdose, the body may show the following symptoms: “diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, heartburn, stomach discomfort, headache, insomnia. It can help to stop taking vitamin C for a period of time.” A day or so relieves symptoms.
