The former figure of sp.a Louis Tobback believes that Bart De Wever has more to fear from possible new federal elections than the PS of Paul Magnette. “It is very likely that De Wever will no longer be in the same position of power as it is today,” said Tobback on Monday at a conference in his city of Leuven.
The former interior minister relies on the latest polls – “which must be confirmed” – showing that the Vlaams Belang would win the next federal elections in Flanders. “De Wever will be the first victim. He has already lost 280,000 voters in the May elections and this is likely to happen again. Sp.a, CD&V and Open Vld have already given ‘and therefore have nothing more to lose,’ he said.
In his eyes, the consequences for the Flemish nationalists of new elections will be important. At present, the N-VA is mathematically ‘essential’ for a Flemish majority, but remains to be seen if this still the case afterwards, he slips.
“I always thought that the N-VA and the PS would reach an agreement. It is not yet excluded, but it will be very difficult.”
For Louis Tobback, the risk is greater today that we will soon return to the polls than the reverse. “It will depend entirely on the latest internal polls that some parties are going to organize.”
