Hotspots Germany: District is over 500 mark, 5 hotspots with many cases

Large hotspot overview: Eight regions are above the 300 mark: These hotspots are driving the corona numbers

On Wednesday, the Chancellor will discuss the upcoming Corona measures with the country leaders. The reason for this is the still high number of infections. But where are the real drivers of these numbers?

The health authorities reported a little more new corona infections to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) on Wednesday compared to the previous week. 18,633 new cases were transmitted within 24 hours, as the RKI announced in the morning. Last Wednesday the number was 17,561. On Friday, a high of 23,648 reported cases was reached.

In October and early November, the number of new corona infections reported in Germany rose rapidly. The value has now leveled off at a high level for about two weeks. The decline hoped for after the partial lockdown came into force has not yet been clearly discernible.

Because of these still high numbers, the Prime Minister, Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU), wants to present her plan to fight the pandemic on Wednesday. In particular, contacts are to be restricted in the future.

But where are the real drivers of the pandemic? A look at the German hotspots:

Hildburghausen

The southern Thuringian district of Hildburghausen has reached a nationwide record for corona infections. According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the number of new infections within the past seven days per 100,000 inhabitants reached 525.9 on Wednesday. In no other district in Germany was the seven-day incidence higher.

According to District Administrator Thomas Müller, a weakening is not in sight for the time being: “We will now march towards 500,” said the CDU politician. According to Müller, clear sources of infection can hardly be made out. There are now corona cases across the board in all institutions. Schools, daycare centers, administrations, police and also old people’s homes are massively affected. “It goes across all ages,” said the district administrator. On ZDF, Müller explained that “stricter rules” were needed now. Especially in the private sphere there is a “more casual way of dealing with things”.

Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains

In Saxon Switzerland, too, the corona numbers have risen rapidly recently. The seven-day incidence was 364.4 on Wednesday, according to the Robert Koch Institute. The hardest hit place, Freital, can attribute about a third of its new infections to an outbreak in a nursing home. 63 residents and 29 employees of the home tested positive, according to a general decree published on Tuesday evening by the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district.

The district ordered residents to be quarantined at home; they are not allowed to leave their rooms without the consent of the nursing staff. In addition, there is a general ban on entering the home until further notice.

City of Speyer

The city of Speyer currently has the highest numbers in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Last Tuesday, according to the Robert Koch Institute, the 7-day incidence was 395.6. About a week later on Wednesday, the value dropped to 360.0. The reason for this could be that the general decree of the city, which has been in place for around a week, is now taking effect. In particular, the mask requirement has been expanded and more attention should be paid to separating groups in daycare centers. The aim is to reduce contact between children and educational professionals. “Unfortunately, a necessary step in view of the increasing number of infections,” says Mayor Stefanie Seiler.

According to the city of Speyer, the increase in the number of new corona infections can primarily be traced back to cases in the reception facility for asylum seekers, retirement homes and schools. Although the city knows these hotspots, “according to information from the health department, the infection process unfortunately remains very diffuse,” says a press release from the city of Speyer.

City of Passau

Up until a few days ago, the Freyung-Grafenau district was most severely affected by Corona in Germany. The situation there has now eased somewhat. In the nearby Passau, however, the incidence value on Tuesday is higher than ever. The important seven-day value in the three-river city was 390.1. But on Wednesday the value fell back to 352.3.

This is one of the reasons why a new regulation for homes has been in effect since Monday. According to the “Passauer Neue Presse” A not insignificant part of the infections in the city is currently concentrated in two old people’s homes. Accordingly, there are 60 infections in these two facilities alone. In the Betty Pfleger senior citizens’ home, twelve residents and seven employees tested positive; in the St. Nikola Monastery of Malta there were even 32 residents and nine employees.

Berlin Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg

The number of new corona infections in Berlin’s Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district has also risen extremely since mid-November. The Robert Koch Institute reported the maximum number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within the past seven days at 399.6 on Tuesday. It recovered on Wednesday and was 329.
