Hollywood Reacts to Barbie Director and Star Being Snubbed by Oscars

In a surprising turn of events, the Oscars snubbed Barbie director Greta Gerwig and star Margot Robbie, leaving Hollywood in a state of shock. The news spread like wildfire, and celebrities took to social media to express their reactions and show support for the talented duo.

John Stamos, known for his role in Full House, shared a funny video on Instagram, using the voices of Margot Robbie’s Barbie and Ryan Gosling’s Ken in a scene from the movie. Stamos captioned the video, “This one goes out to Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie who crafted a film that was both a critical success and a cultural phenomenon, delving into feminist themes through the lens of Barbie and challenging patriarchal norms. This movie not only resonated deeply but also grossed OVER a billion dollars. Yet, in a twist of irony, both women were snubbed by the Academy. Everyone go re-watch Barbie tonight.”

The support continued as Simu Liu, who played Ken in the Barbie film, shared his thoughts on the snub. Liu took to X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, to express his admiration for Gerwig and Robbie. He wrote, “Being involved in a small way gave me a window into just how hard Greta and Margot had to fight to get Barbie made, and how flawlessly they executed. Together they started a movement, touched the world, and reinvigorated cinema. They deserve everything. They ARE everything.”

Even Michelle Yeoh, who made an appearance on the Today show, couldn’t hide her disappointment. When asked about the snubs, Yeoh said, “You know, joy and disappointment, it seems to go hand in hand. It’s just, for us, it’s like, it’s not enough nominations to go around.” She continued, “The only take is like, it’s so competitive out there, and there is no guarantee because you’re not the only voter, you know? It’s widespread. Thank God the movie got nominated for Best Picture. But you do think, ‘How do you get nominated for Best Picture but not Best Director and not Best Actress?'”

While Gerwig and Robbie may have been overlooked in the Best Director and Best Actress categories, respectively, they did receive recognition for their work. Gerwig received a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay, and Robbie was nominated as one of the producers of the film for Best Picture.

“It happens, and I’m sorry it happened to them because it’s obviously one of the most successful and beloved movies. Look at the box office,” Yeoh added.

The snub of Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie by the Oscars has left many in Hollywood questioning the selection process and advocating for more diverse representation. Despite the disappointment, their film Barbie continues to be celebrated for its critical acclaim and cultural impact. As Hollywood rallies behind Gerwig and Robbie, it remains to be seen how this snub will shape future conversations about recognition in the industry.
