HIV/AIDS in Moldova: Current Situation and World Day Events

Chisinau, Dec. 1 /MOLDPRES/. At the beginning of the current year, approximately 16,000 cases of HIV disease were registered in the Republic of Moldova, of which only 10,777 people know their status. At the same time, 5,200 people infected with HIV are not taken into account and do not benefit from antiretroviral treatment. The data were made public today by the National Public Health Agency in the context of marking the World Day to fight HIV/AIDS, reports MOLDPRES.

According to the quoted source, until December 20, events will be organized in the country, with the aim of informing the population about HIV/AIDS, promoting testing, mobilizing and involving communities in the response to HIV infection.

This year, World HIV AIDS Day is held under the slogan “Communities’ Voices Matter”. In this context, the health authorities urge the population to get tested for HIV free of charge.

Health data show that in recent years, people diagnosed with HIV infection have an average age of 40. Increase the registration of cases in rural localities; the transmission route is predominantly heterosexual.

According to WHO data, HIV remains a major public health problem globally, claiming the lives of approximately 40.4 million people. In the year 2022, more than 630 thousand people died from causes related to HIV and 1.3 million people became infected with HIV.
