Historical! Team achieves promotion and will play for the first time in Serie A in Italy

Rome Italy.

he Spezia rose to the first division of Italian football for the first time in its history, after beating Frosinone in the playoffs for a place in Serie A.

That club, now trained by former Italian international Alessandro Nesta, won 1-0 this Thursday in the second leg of the playoff at Spezia Calcio, but needed a victory by two goals to come back.

In the first leg, last Sunday, Spezia had won by the same result (1-0) in Frosinone. Spezia achieved promotion thanks to their better position at the end of the regular season in Italian Serie B (3rd against 8th).

Spezia therefore accompanies the two clubs that had already achieved their promotion to Serie A 2020-2021, Benevento and Crotone, the first two from the last Serie B.

Those three teams will take the places of the three descendants, Lecce, Brescia and SPAL de Ferrara.

The new season of Serie A is due to begin on September 19.

Spezia, a club from the city of La Spezia (Liguria), located a hundred kilometers from Genoa, will play in Serie A (born in 1929) for the first time in its history. Before he was in the so-called first division for a few seasons in the 1920s, but then the tournament had a regional group format.

One of the club’s support points is its ‘tifosi’. This Thursday, although the game was played behind closed doors due to the new coronavirus pandemic, there were many fans who received the players when they arrived at the stadium and who followed the match in the surroundings, lighting flares, according to the images and photos released by television and on social media.

Spezia’s coach is Vincenzo Italiano, who made his debut this season on a second division bench. He is a regular in category changes: as a player he had several promotions and relegations with Hellas Verona and Chievo. As a coach, he managed to promote Trapani last season, from Serie C to Serie B.

The La Spezia mayor’s office will now have to address the question of the stadium, with remodeling works to adapt it to the demands of the first division, according to Corriere dello Sport. Therefore, the club may have to play its first Serie A games in other stadiums.
