Hipgnosis Documentary: Inside the Iconic Design Studio with Rock Legends

Eat. New in the cinema: A documentary about the design studio Hipgnosis, sensual women’s cinema from France and erotic nonsense from Hollywood.

„Squaring The Circle“

Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell met for the first time in Cambridge in 1964. They become friends and move to London. They meet former mates who founded a band: Pink Floyd. They designed the cover of the second album “A Saucerful of Secrets” for them. They founded the design studio Hipgnosis, which created trend-setting designs for the LP covers of Pink Floyd, the Wings, Ten CC, The Alan Parsons Project and Led Zeppelin until it dissolved in 1985. Anton Corbijn, a photographer and clip director who was a creative force in the pop business of the 1980s and 90s, has now made a cinema documentary about Hipgnosis, which, in addition to Aubrey Powell (Thorgerson died in 2013), also included greats such as David Gilmour, Roger Waters, Paul McCartney and Robert Plant and Noel Gallagher chat from the inside out. It is not the usual adulation of comparable US productions, but a rockumentary that is supported by knowledge and enthusiasm for a fascinating subject and the presence of famous people with the ability to be eloquent and self-ironic. It doesn’t get any better. And to add: The Ludwiggalerie in Oberhausen is showing a large exhibition about the ingenious Hipgnosis record covers until May 20th.

“Return to Corsica”

Cleaner Khédidja is invited to a holiday home in Corsica by a rich Parisian customer. Together with her daughters Jessica (18) and Farah (15), she is traveling to the island for the summer, which she had to leave hastily under tragic circumstances 15 years earlier. Catherine Corsini, French film writer (“La Belle Saison”) with a feel for sensual female characters, serves up another melodrama of the classic school (late confrontation with personal trauma) with teenage sensibilities between self-discovery and same-sex love. The image design is exquisite, as is the acting.

„Miller’s Girl“

More sultry erotic thrill than feminine self-confidence: “Miller’s Girl” with Martin Freeman and Jenna Ortega. © picture alliance / ASSOCIATED PRESS | Zac Popik

Cairo Sweet is the best student in teacher Miller’s literature class. For a competition she has to write a short story in the style of her favorite author. She chooses Henry Miller and writes an erotomaniac fantasy. Miller rejects the work as pornographic. In doing so, he makes enemies of Cairo and his wife. A very effects-hungry directorial debut from Jade Haley Bartlett, who wants to conjure up feminine self-confidence in the script and visual design, but can only manage a sultry erotic thriller a la “Wild Things” with the look of an advertisement for southern liqueur. The good Englishman Martin Freeman is also not a serious opponent for Jenna Ortega’s scheming sex nymph.
