The police in Troms report on Thursday night about a rescue operation where a person has been taken out of the mountain Mjeldskartinden on Kvaløya.

– It is a question of a tour group of two people, where one person has fallen from the mountain as the snow shovel at the top breaks. The other person, who called the police, estimates that the injured person has fallen a couple of hundred meters, says operations manager Eirik Kileng to VG.

– The patient was alive when he was taken out, Kileng states.

The injured, a woman in her 20s, was flown to the University of Northern Norway (UNN) by ambulance helicopter.

At 22.48, UNN reports that the injuries are described as moderate and that the patient is stable. Previously, the condition of the hiker was unclear.

Jørn Resvoll, communications consultant at UNN, confirms to VG that the woman’s condition is not critical.

– Beyond this, we can not release further information.

The police were notified of the incident at 20.08. Relatives have been notified.

The main rescue center cannot answer questions about the person’s condition.

– It is a serious accident, says rescue leader Jakob Karlsen to VG.

– In shock

At 21.45 Kileng informs that the rescue operation has ended, and that there are good weather conditions in the area.

– The person who reported the accident was taken down from the mountain by police helicopter and driven to the University Hospital in Tromsø. The person is physically unharmed, says the operations manager VG.

The police called out volunteers, police dogs and Norwegian rescue dogs, but managed to retrieve the injured person by ambulance helicopter.

– We have the police helicopter in the air to pick up the rest of the tour group, ie the last person left on the mountain. The person in question will be taken care of. The person was in shock, naturally enough, but is in good health otherwise, Kileng said before the person was brought down.

A landslide is not considered an ordinary landslide problem, but is still a danger that must be addressed. Shovels can break by themselves or when people step on the shovel and make it crack, according to the website varsom.no.

Correction: An earlier version of this case stated that rescue leader Jakob Karlsen told VG that the condition of the injured person was serious. This is not true. He said the accident was serious. This was corrected on 19.05.2022 at 22.08.
