Causes of High Blood Pressure

Many people do not realize that they have high blood pressure, because hypertension is usually asymptomatic until it reaches a critical level.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, common risk factors that can lead to hypertension include:

  • High sodium or low potassium diet
  • Lack of physical activity
  • Obesity
  • Too much alcohol
  • Tobacco use
  • Genetics and family history

“Young people are especially vulnerable because they tend to not monitor their blood pressure on a regular basis,” said cardiologist Wanpen Vongpatanasin of UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas.
