Here’s the effect of Covid-19 on long-term health

LENGKONG, AYOBANDUNG.COM – Scientists are beginning to understand various health problems caused by Covid-19. Some of them may have had an effect attached to patients and the health system for years.

In addition to breathing problems that make the patient panting, the virus also causes Covid-19 to attack many organ systems. In some cases it even causes severe damage.

“We thought this was just a respiratory virus. Apparently, it affected the pancreas. It happened after the liver. It happened after the liver, brain, kidneys and other organs. We didn’t understand that at first,” said cardiologist and director of Scripps Research Translational Institute in La Jolla, California, Dr. Eric Topol.

In addition to respiratory disorders, patients with Covid-19 can experience blood clotting disorders which can cause strokes and extreme inflammation that attacks various organ systems. This virus can also cause neurological complications that range from headaches, dizziness, and loss of taste or odor to seizures and confusion.

With influenza, Khan said, people with underlying heart conditions are also at higher risk of complications. Kahn believes there will be large expenses for health care and burdens for individuals who survived Covid-19.

Recovery can also be slow, imperfect, and expensive, with a large impact on quality of life. Patients who are in intensive care units or on ventilators for weeks need to spend a long time in rehabilitation to regain mobility and strength.

“It can take up to seven days for each day you are hospitalized to recover such strength. The more difficult you age, and you may never return to the same level of function,” Kahn said.

Deputy director of infectious diseases at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Jay Butler, said new studies needed to be done to understand the long-term effects of infections.

“We hear anecdotal reports about people who are exhausted, shortness of breath. How long it will last is hard to say,” Butler said.

Dr Helen Salisbury of the University of Oxford wrote in the British Medical Journal, stating, the symptoms of the Corona virus usually heal in two or three weeks. It is estimated that one in 10 experiences prolonged symptoms.

Many patients have normal chest radiographs and there are no signs of inflammation, but they have not returned to normal.

“If you ran three kilometers a week before and now feel breathless after one flight of stairs, or if you cough endlessly and are too tired to get back to work, then the fear that you might never regain your health before is very real,” said Salisbury.
