Here’s how to preview WhatsApp voice messages before sending them

If you want to preview a WhatsApp voice message so that you can verify that your gibberish makes sense before the message is sent, follow the steps in this short tutorial.

WhatsApp introduces voice message previews

We’ve all been through this.

You want to send a short voice message to a friend asking if they would like to go to the cinema, but it will take several tries to get it right. In the past, you couldn’t safely send your voice recording to a friend because there was no way to preview the message.

However, now you can review a draft of the voice message before sending it. Not only does this help your gossip make sense, but you can also hear it the way the other side is experiencing it. Meta’s messaging service officially announced that voice message previews are now available in WhatsApp apps for iOS, Android, web and desktop.

“These are not errors, these are samples,” says the WhatsApp announcement Twitter. “Now you can preview your voice messages before you hit send.” You can also quickly delete a message if you’re not happy with the preview.

Here’s how to preview a WhatsApp message before it’s sent

To preview an audio message, click the play button that appears automatically in WhatsApp for desktop, mobile, and web right after you finish recording the message.

  1. Start WhatsApp on your iPhone
  2. Open an individual or group chat in the WhatsApp app
  3. Touch and hold the microphone icon, then slide it up to lock speakerphone recording
  4. Start speaking to record your voice message
  5. When you’re done, click the Stop button.
  6. Press the triangular play icon that appears when you stop recording

Now you can hear exactly how your message will sound to the recipient.

For longer messages, it helps that you can play the message from a certain timestamp by tapping that part of the recording in the waveform.

Don’t like the way your voice recording sounds and think you can do better? No problem, just click the trash can icon to delete the recorded message and start over. When you are satisfied with the results, click the Send button to send the voice recording to the selected contact.
