“Our country is going through an unprecedented health crisis. In this very special period, being a citizen also means giving your time for others. Because civic engagement is essential, Marlène Schiappa, Minister Delegate to the Minister of the Interior, in charge of Citizenship, wanted for the first time, to organize an operation to reward those who commit themselves to the services of others,
“Prodigies of the Republic”. In the department of Hérault, the choice fell on Vincent Azuara, a very active volunteer within the French Red Cross, attached to the office of Montpellier.
An honor for this young Hérault who has been involved for nearly ten years in this association: This “Prodigy of the Republic” began his “volunteer career” by joining the Montpellier-Hérault unit, where he became a first aid worker. Over the years, he has taken part in numerous relief operations (rave parties, floods, fires, etc.) which have allowed him to discover the entire Red Cross universe. Today and for a year now, he has held the positions of regional director of emergency and first aid deputy to operational resources and deputy regional manager of communication, in the departmental management. An honorable volunteer commitment, because he has also served as coordinator of the municipal forest fire committee of Castelnau-le-Lez for nearly five years. After having been deputy gendarme to the motorized brigade of the road safety squadron -EDSR 34- to the company of Castelnau-le-Lez, Vincent Azuara has just joined municipal police from Saint-Gély-du-Fesc. He does not count his hours to be at the service of the inhabitants.
“Since the start of the COVID-19 health crisis and the periods of confinement that the country has to go through, he has professionally committed to others in his capacity as a municipal police officer but also in each of his free time, for the Cross. -French red where he invested nearly 1,500 hours during the crisis. Head of French Red Cross operations throughout the department, logistics manager, in charge of communication and press relations, anti-Covid-19 mediator, … his experience and qualities have enabled him to occupy all his functions at within the crisis unit of the Red Cross, or in the field alongside committed volunteers, ”notes the management of the association.
In Hérault, the French Red Cross has been mobilized since the start of the Covid-19 crisis. Its teams were present at the launch of the solidarity delivery operation “Croix-Rouge Chez-Vous” allowing people who cannot travel to shop or collect their medication to be delivered directly to their homes by volunteers. Alongside those who no one saw in the street during confinement, the Red Cross managed the emergency accommodation centers in Montpellier.
Detect, alert and protect
Detect, alert and protect the population, the teams of volunteers were mobilized on the screening centers in Montpellier, in the villages of the department with the device launched by the region “ProxiTest”, but also alongside the firefighters of Hérault -Sdis 34- on the port of Sète and on all devices such as at the Montpellier Méditerranée airport of Fréjorgues, commune of Mauguio.
While screening actions are maintained, volunteers are now engaged in vaccination operations such as the Montpellier vaccinodrome installed at the Town Hall and Béziers, a commitment to missions of more than 75,000 hours of volunteering, which allows the French Red Cross from here to be “Everywhere you need volunteers”.
